We used to hang out in the same group on weekends, and he’d occasionally come around. It took a little time, but eventually we started talking more, then texting, and before long, we were spending more time together, just the two of us. Our first actual date came not long after, and honestly, we’ve been inseparable ever since. It was during one of those early conversations, just the two of us, that I really started to see him differently. We talked about our hopes for the future, and one of the things that came up was having children. He comes from a big, blended family: 3 brothers, a sister, 2 half-brothers, and 2 stepsisters. I have 2 brothers myself. I remember telling him I wanted three kids so we could all still fit into a regular car. It felt easy and natural to talk about those things with him, and from early on, we knew family would be at the center of our life together. We then began the long , heartbreaking journey to start our family. Through it all, my husband and I have grown stronger together. We’ve supported each other through school, grief counseling, and support groups like Angel Babies. We talk about the son’s we lost, Brandon and Phoenix, often. We imagine what they’d be doing now. We find comfort in keeping their memories alive through events, community, and the small ways we honor them every day.

After getting married in 2018, we began fertility treatments when we weren’t getting pregnant on our own. I responded well to oral medications and became pregnant on our second round, but tragically, our first son, Brandon, was born at 21 weeks and 4 days after my water broke unexpectedly. He lived for 30 minutes. We never received a clear explanation for why it happened. A few months later, we began trying again, but the pandemic made treatments slow and difficult. After six IUIs, none of which were successful, we moved forward with IVF. We created two embryos, our fresh transfer didn’t take, but our frozen transfer did. That pregnancy brought so much hope, but sadly, my water broke again at 19½ weeks, and our second son, Phoenix, was born. After that, I had a transabdominal cerclage placed, a more permanent and higher-level intervention, but even with that, I no longer feel physically or emotionally safe trying to carry another pregnancy. The risks are just too high, and the grief too deep. We still have the dream of becoming parents and building our family, and that’s what led us to surrogacy. We’re pursuing this path not because it was easy, but because it’s our way forward, one filled with hope, love, and the belief that our future child is still meant to be. We’re incredibly grateful for the possibility that someone might be willing to help us carry this dream into reality.

I love listening to audiobooks, especially when I’m doing things around the house or on the go. I also enjoy trying out new recipes. There’s something really comforting about cooking, especially when it turns out great. I have a Cricut that I use to make all kinds of things, but most meaningfully, I make memory bears for families in our community who’ve experienced loss. It’s a small way I can offer comfort to others walking a similar path. My husband is more into hands-on hobbies. He builds Gundam models and plays online games with his brothers. It’s a nice way for them to stay connected even when life gets busy. We both love to travel, especially around California. We’re hoping to visit Japan and Italy someday. We were frequent Disneyland passholders and would love the chance to visit the Disney parks abroad, too. Volunteering with Angel Babies is something really close to our hearts. After Brandon and Phoenix died, they supported us in ways we’ll always be grateful for. We now give back by helping with their Walk committee and co-facilitating support groups for other grieving families. I’ve built a deep connection with the organization and plan to continue supporting their work however I can. In my job, I also provide grief support to families who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss, including sleep-related deaths before age one. On a lighter note, we’re also big foodies. We love trying out new restaurants, tracking down our favorite food trucks, and spending weekends at local events or farmers markets. It’s even better when we can bring our family along!

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine provides the following recommendations for evaluation of gestational carriers (i.e., many fertility clinics will require the following for their gestational carriers):

 • Be within the ages of 21 and 45
 • Body mass index in between 19 and 32
 • No smoking, abusing drugs, alcohol or prescription medications

Watch the following video to review the Medical and Psychological Clearance procedures that surrogates must complete.

No one likes to talk about surrogate compensation, but it is an important factor in any surrogacy agreement. The following is how we classify high, medium and low compensation (excluding the value of any benefits). Many factors affect surrogate compensation including surrogate experience (e.g., has the woman been a surrogate before?), whether the surrogate is signed up with an agency and surrogate preferences.

 • Low = surrogate compensation between $45,000 and $50,000
 • Medium = surrogate compensation between $55,000 and $60,000
 • High = surrogate compensation greater than $65,000

You can learn more about how much surrogates get paid in our surrogacy guide’s module: “How much does surrogacy cost?”.
